Small Pet Sitting Services in Ottawa | In-Home Care for Rabbits, Birds & More

Your small companion deserves expert care while you’re away. Loving Paws provides professional in-home small pet sitting throughout Ottawa’s neighborhoods from Westboro condos to Barrhaven family homes, ensuring your rabbit, guinea pig, bird, hamster, or reptile receives species-personalized attention in their familiar environment.

Zero Transport Stress for Sensitive Species

Small pets panic when moved to unfamiliar places. Your rabbit, guinea pig, bird, or reptile stays comfortable in their own Kanata hutch, Glebe aviary, or Manotick habitat no boarding facility chaos disrupting their carefully controlled environment.

Specialized Exotic Pet Knowledge

Generic sitters don’t understand that guinea pigs need vitamin C, chinchillas can’t get wet, or bearded dragons require precise UVB cycles. Our certified caregivers know species-specific needs from administering rabbit antibiotics to maintaining reptile temperatures during Ottawa’s -20°C winters.

Consistent Routine in Familiar Territory

Small pets thrive on predictability. We maintain your pet’s exact feeding schedule, habitat conditions, and enrichment routine at your Centretown condo or Barrhaven home—whether that’s dust baths for chinchillas, floor time for house rabbits, or live feeding protocols for your ball python.

Why Ottawa Pet Owners Choose In-Home Small Pet Sitting

Stress-Free Environment for Sensitive Species: Small pets experience severe stress when moved to unfamiliar locations. Our in-home visits maintain your pet’s routine in their secure habitat, whether that’s a custom rabbit hutch in Kanata, a climate-controlled reptile setup in The Glebe, or an aviary in Manotick.

Specialized Knowledge Beyond Basic Pet Care Our small pet sitter understand critical small pet needs. We’ve handled everything from administering antibiotics to geriatric rabbits in Rockcliffe Park to maintaining UVB lighting schedules for iguanas in New Edinburgh.

Flexible Scheduling for Ottawa’s Seasonal Needs Winter temperatures below -20°C require vigilant heating lamp checks and draft protection, while summer humidity control is critical for heat-sensitive species like chinchillas, especially in older Centretown and Hintonburg homes without central air.

Boarding at a Sitter’s Home $25/day

For pet parents preferring off-site care, select small pets can stay in our sitter’s cozy, safe home environment with the same loving attention (depending on pet type and availability).

Not sure which option fits your pet best? Contact us for a free consultation. We’ll recommend the perfect visit duration and frequency based on your rabbit’s exercise needs, your guinea pig’s social requirements, your bird’s interaction level, or your reptile’s feeding schedule.

Multi-Visit Packages & Money-Saving Options

Save with our multi-visit packages, perfect for pets needing frequent care or daily visits while you’re away. These packages make regular in-home small pet sitting more affordable and convenient for Ottawa families, ensuring your pets stay happy, healthy, and enriched without breaking your budget.

Species-Specific Expertise

Rabbit Sitting We understand rabbit behavior from binky jumps to thumping warnings. Our sitters provide unlimited timothy hay, rotate vegetables (romaine, cilantro, parsley), monitor for dental issues common in breeds like Holland Lops and Netherland Dwarfs, and offer supervised floor time in bunny-proofed rooms. Ideal for house rabbits in Ottawa South bungalows or outdoor hutches with predator protection in rural Manotick.

Guinea Pig Care Social guinea pigs thrive with consistent interaction. We maintain vitamin C supplementation critical for cavy health, ensure bonded pairs stay together, provide hidey houses for security, trim nails using stress-free handling, and recognize early URI symptoms that escalate quickly in Ottawa’s temperature fluctuations between seasons.

Bird Sitting (Parrots, Cockatiels, Budgies, Finches) Avian care requires understanding species temperaments. We follow established routines to prevent stress behaviors, provide fresh food and clean water twice daily, engage intelligent species like African Greys with puzzles and conversation, monitor droppings for health changes, maintain optimal humidity for feather condition, and respect individual bird personalities—from shy budgies in Orleans to vocal macaws in Nepean.

Small Mammal Sitting (Hamsters, Gerbils, Chinchillas, Ferrets) Nocturnal and crepuscular pets need caregivers who accommodate their active hours. We schedule evening visits when hamsters are most alert, provide dust baths for chinchillas in climate-controlled rooms, proof play areas for escape-artist ferrets, and ensure quiet daytime environments in busy neighborhoods like ByWard Market or Westboro Village.

Reptile & Amphibian Care Ectotherms require precise environmental management. Our experienced sitters maintain basking temperatures for bearded dragons, humidity levels for ball pythons, UVB exposure cycles for leopard geckos, live feeding protocols for insectivores, and water quality for aquatic turtles. We’ve cared for everything from corn snakes in Barrhaven to fire-bellied toads in Hintonburg apartments.

Serving Ottawa’s Diverse Neighborhoods

The Glebe & Old Ottawa South Historic tree-lined streets with century homes and active families. We navigate Victorian-era layouts to access basement reptile rooms and provide small pet care while owners explore Lansdowne Park events or Glebe Farmers Market.

Westboro & Hintonburg Urban professionals in condos and townhomes with rabbits and guinea pigs. Quick visits coordinated around your work schedule, with easy parking along Richmond Road or Wellington West.

Centretown High-rise living with small pets suited to apartment life. We’re experienced with condo access protocols, elevator transport of supplies, and caring for birds and small mammals in compact spaces near Parliament Hill.

Kanata & Nepean Suburban families with dedicated pet rooms and outdoor hutches. We service areas near Kanata Centrum, Bells Corners, and Barrhaven, providing longer visits for multi-pet households with rabbits, guinea pigs, and birds.

Orleans & Riverside South Eastern suburbs with newer homes and growing families. Convenient scheduling for professionals commuting to downtown, with coverage during March Break or summer vacations to Tremblant.

Rockcliffe Park & New Edinburgh Established neighborhoods with heritage properties. Discreet, reliable service for discerning pet owners, with experience in high-value homes and specialized exotic pet collections.

Manotick & Rural Ottawa Acreage properties with larger animal setups and outdoor enclosures. We understand rural access, seasonal road conditions, and enhanced security needs for homes set back from Bankfield or River roads.

What Makes Loving Paws Different

Certified Small Animal Caregivers Our 15+ team members complete specialized training in exotic pet handling, rabbit-savvy care, avian behavior, and reptile husbandry. All caregivers are background-checked, insured, bonded, and follow Pet Sitters International standards.

Daily Diary Updates: Receive detailed notes about your pet’s meals, behavior, bathroom habits, and activity level. Upgrade to photo and video updates via text or email to see your bunny’s binky or your parrot’s playtime while you’re attending a conference in Toronto or vacationing in the Gatineau Hills.

Ready-Key Program Secure key management eliminates the stress of hiding keys or coordinating access. Your designated caregiver arrives on schedule without requiring neighbor assistance—particularly valuable during Ottawa winters when you don’t want friends navigating icy walkways.

Medical Care Expertise Post-operative monitoring, subcutaneous fluid administration, medication schedules, wound care, and mobility assistance for aging rabbits or disabled guinea pigs. We coordinate with Ottawa veterinary clinics like Merivale Cat Hospital, Alta Vista Animal Hospital, and Kanata Animal Hospital for continuity of care.

24/7 Online Booking Schedule visits anytime through our platform. Last-minute business trips to Montreal, unexpected hospital stays, or spontaneous weekend getaways to Kingston—we accommodate urgent requests when boarding facilities are full or inappropriate for small pets.

Common Small Pet Care Concerns Addressed

“My rabbit has special dietary needs” We follow precise feeding protocols for rabbits with dental disease requiring Critical Care, guinea pigs with bladder stones needing low-calcium greens, or birds on pellet-conversion diets. Your written instructions are followed exactly, with photos documenting each meal.

“My reptile requires live feeding” We handle crickets, mealworms, dubia roaches, and appropriate-sized mice for snakes. Feeders are gut-loaded properly, and we monitor feeding response to ensure your pet eats during visits critical for ball pythons that may refuse food when stressed.

“I have multiple small pets with different schedules” Whether you have three guinea pigs, two rabbits, and a cockatiel, or a bearded dragon and two ferrets, we manage complex routines. Bonded pairs stay together, territorial animals receive separate attention, and we track individual needs through detailed visit logs.

“My bird is nervous around strangers” We move slowly, speak softly, and let birds set the pace. Many parrots warm up within a few visits once they recognize consistent caregivers. For extremely fearful birds, we focus on essential care (food, water, cage cleaning) while minimizing direct interaction that increases stress.

“Winter weather makes me worry about reliability” Ottawa’s harsh winters don’t stop our service. We arrive for scheduled visits even during snowstorms that shut down the Queensway, using 4WD vehicles and allowing extra travel time. Your pet’s care isn’t cancelled because of weather—unlike kennels that may close during severe conditions.

Seasonal Small Pet Care in Ottawa

Winter (December-March) Sub-zero temperatures require extra vigilance. We ensure garage or mudroom rabbits have insulated hutches and heated water bottles, check that reptile heating elements maintain proper gradients during hydro fluctuations common in ice storms, and monitor for respiratory issues when furnace-dried air affects birds and guinea pigs.

Spring (April-May) Seasonal shedding in rabbits and guinea pigs needs frequent brushing to prevent wool block. We increase grooming during this period and watch for respiratory flare-ups when Ottawa’s dramatic temperature swings stress immune systems.

Summer (June-August) Heat management is critical. Chinchillas and rabbits overheat easily; we provide frozen water bottles, ensure air circulation, and schedule visits during cooler morning or evening hours. Reptiles may need adjusted basking times when ambient temperatures rise above typical ranges.

Fall (September-November) Back-to-school and Thanksgiving travel creates high demand. We book early for popular dates and help transition outdoor rabbits to protected areas before the first frost, typically by mid-October in Ottawa.

Step 3: Customize Your Care Plan. Specify feeding times, play preferences, medication schedules, emergency protocols, and communication frequency. Whether your elderly rabbit needs twice-daily Critical Care feeding or your nervous cockatiel only wants quiet water changes, we document everything.

Why Small Pets Thrive With In-Home Care

Commercial boarding facilities rarely accommodate rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, or reptiles properly. Those that accept exotic pets often lack species-specific knowledge, house multiple unfamiliar animals near each other (causing stress), and cannot maintain the precise environmental controls reptiles require.

In-home sitting provides:

  • Zero transport stress or habitat disruption
  • Consistent temperature, humidity, and lighting
  • Familiar sights, sounds, and smells that calm anxious animals
  • Individual attention without exposure to unfamiliar animals
  • Flexible scheduling for owners catching early flights from Ottawa International or returning late from cottage weekends

Your rabbit doesn’t experience the trauma of a car ride to Nepean. Your parrot doesn’t hear unfamiliar birds screeching in a boarding facility. Your bearded dragon’s carefully calibrated environment isn’t compromised by generic “reptile room” conditions.

Trusted by Ottawa’s Small Pet Community Since 2005

Over two decades serving Canada’s capital, we’ve earned trust from:

  • Rabbit rescue volunteers in Old Ottawa South fostering special-needs bunnies
  • Avian enthusiasts in Rockcliffe Park with extensive parrot collections
  • Reptile keepers in Barrhaven with custom-built dragon enclosures
  • Multi-pet households in Kanata juggling guinea pigs, hamsters, and birds
  • Seniors in Westboro with companion cockatiels requiring gentle handling

Our 4.9/5 rating reflects commitment to communication, reliability, and genuine affection for the small animals in our care. Clients mention our extra efforts—texting a photo when their rabbit does a binky, noting when their guinea pig seems more vocal than usual, or calling immediately if anything seems slightly off.

Don’t settle for generic pet sitters who treat your rabbit like a cat or your parrot like a decoration. Choose caregivers who understand that guinea pigs need vitamin C, that chinchillas can’t get wet, that bearded dragons require UVB exposure, and that bonded rabbits shouldn’t be separated.

Reasons to join our team and earn a good income

WE WORK HARD TO SUPPORT OUR DOG WALKERS, AND PET & HOUSE SITTERS

  • Work with us as one of our sub-contractors by driving to the homes of our clients to provide dog walking, pet sitting, medical care, and house sitting services.

  • The amount of work depends on the number of requests we receive from clients for our services, and that number keeps on growing as more and more pet parents and home owners learn of our services.

  • We diligently maintain our website and routinely work to ensure strong Web Search Engine Optimization so that our website appears top-most on web pages for search results.

  • Requests for our services come from clients who come to our website and submit quote or reservation requests. We then assign the work directly to you.

  • All work is paid, and we pay one of the pet care industry’s best rates for walking dogs, pet sitting, and house sitting.

  • No purchase of any “kit” is required to work for us. We do not charge any fee as a condition of working with us. We are not a pyramid-type organization.

  • There is much flexibility in terms of where, when, and how work is done, as long as the needs of our clients and their pets are met, and as long as what is paid for is done (we guarantee the duration of each visit, and that the visit will take place). Most clients are easy going about the services they need. Some clients are more specific; e.g. if their pet needs medication.

  • Aside from a computer with internet access, cell phone, and a vehicle that you need to work with us, we provide everything else you need to do the work, and for free: our admin software tool, access to our database, personalized email address, your insurance coverage and bonding, all the necessary printed materials, a professional binder for all documents, 4 handbooks covering medical care, procedures, and policies topics, and brochures/posters for networking.

  • We generally sponsor one major pet-related event annually; e.g. Pet Expo, and expect you will attend with us.

  • We put you in touch with new clients after they accept our quotes or existing clients after they reserve our services. Essentially, we pre-screen each assignment request to ensure it is valid before asking you to decide whether or not you want to take it on.

  • You can reduce your taxable income on your annual income tax filing with the Canada Revenue Agency by claiming eligible expenses for working as a sub-contractor, for using space where you live for office / admin work, and for using your vehicle for work.
  • We provide service every day of the year, especially on weekends and holidays when people tend to go away, and we pay 1.5X the normal rate for work done on a holiday.

  • You will interact with kind, animal-loving people who will appreciate and welcome the services you will provide, and who will trust you with their homes, belongings and their living pet(s).

  • You will have a territory and only be expected to drive to the homes of clients who live within typically 15-km from your home. We pay extra if you need to drive further (unless you agree to a larger territory when you join our team).

  • Walking dogs leads to getting exercise and the fresh are is as good for you as it is for the dogs; count on your health improving and not being stuck in a windowless office cubicle.

  • You will be pleasantly greeted at front doors by many pets that will be happy to see you and to also give you lots of unconditional love, affection and attention in return for just enough simple food and water, and all the play time and TLC you can afford.

  • You will experience improvements to your stress levels … numerous studies show that spending time with animals is relaxing and beneficial to human health.

  • You will learn about pet health and what it takes to become one of the region’s most respected, professional pet sitters.

  • You will have the opportunity to grow with us … we are increasingly called upon for our dog walking, pet sitting, medical care, and house sitting services. We provided our services to thousands of clients in the greater Ottawa region since 2005 and in Mississauga since 2012. Our goal is to reach more and more communities as we move forward.

  • We work on a very personalized level and are always available. We answer questions and solve problems quickly, and we invite suggestions for change and improvement regularly.
